HISTORY OF DIAMOND
Diamond and Love – Hand in hand for centuries
The moment when a couple decides to marry is one of the most special moments of their life. That moment indicates that two persons wish to live together eternally. Diamond, a gift from the love, invites the romanticism and magic extending to centuries.
The first diamond in history
It goes back to the 15th century when diamond was named as the best gift of love. Diamond rings became a tradition when the first one was given by Archduke Maximilian of Austria to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. In that period, diamond was considered as a talisman or charm that would boost the husband’s love towards his wife. It was even believed that the arrowhead of Eros, the Goddess of Love, was diamond. This royal tradition spread to communities in myriad of regions worldwide after a short while. And it started to set the most noteworthy moment of engagement ceremonies in the history.
The power of diamond
The tradition of wearing a diamond wedding ring on the 4th finger of left hand, known as the ring finger, goes back to ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptians believed that vena amoris, the vein of love, passed through this finger and directly reached the heart.
Diamond’s splendour
When it was started to present diamond as the engagement ring, the setting, housing and prongs in which it was seated was being designed in a stylish fashion, yet no effort was being shown for diamond to best reflect its shimmer. After the discovery of diamond mines in Africa in 1870, diamond spread to larger communities, bringing about increase in demand to this precious stone, and changes in designs became apparent.
Miraculous
Diamond is an amazingly beautiful and rare jewellery stone. Before dinosaurs started to walk on the earth, they came into existence in nature upon a dazzling travel of formation within the capsule of their own stone. They formed while travelling at an extraordinary high speed up to the earth surface within the ascending lava melts deep in earth’s core under high temperature and pressure. On earth, after exposure to the nature’s fury in the form of water, wind and excessive cold, they sank into the earth where they started to wait for discovery again. Only a small amount of these precious stones could survive after this unbelievable journey. And only a rare segment of these survivors are of appropriate quality and size for cutting, finishing and jewellery craft. Diamond is indeed one of the miracles of nature.
Magical and Mysterious
Diamond has enchanted the mankind for centuries. Not only for being rare and beautiful, but also for being magical. It is impossible to cut them with any tool, they mysteriously receive no damage in fire, leading to the belief that they have supernatural powers.
According to ancient Greeks, diamond was the tears of God. The Romans believed that they were the pieces of broken pots detached from the stars, and Indians believed they were evil eye talismans expelling diseases, thieves and devil forces. In other cultures, diamond was believed to be curative precious stones conferring wisdom. With its legends and magical features, diamond captivated many people, transformed the richest and wealthiest people of the globe into its aspired followers.
Diamond is an alluring treasury. It accommodates myriad of love stories surrounded by the themes of win and betray, tales of passion and intrigue, stories of empires conquered but then forfeited; in other words the stories stuffed by the beauty, magic and mystery of diamond.
